5 Days In North Sikkim

North Sikkim is a place which will amaze you with its natural beauty, serene and virgin environment.
This 5-day-itinerary is perfect to cover North SikkimBefore you read entire itinerary, consider below points to plan in a better way:
  • This itinerary starts and ends in Bagdogra Airport.
  • Hire a cab or rent a car from Bagdogra Airport. Do not opt for self driving if you don't have experience to drive in the mountains and in snow. Best option is to hire all your cabs from a single agency. Do some research and contact any local agency and book a cab as per your budget.
  • Back in 2018, when I traveled to Sikkim, the nearest airport was Bagdogra Airport which is in Siliguri. However, now Sikkim state has its own airport so you can use that Airport as well.
When To Visit:
The best time to visit this place is from March to May and from September to November as the weather remains quite pleasant during this time. I had visited in mid-December and it was freezing cold with temperature of -10 degrees. The temperature also sometimes goes down to -20 degree Celsius in winter so carry appropriate clothes if you plan to visit Sikkim in winter which lasts from December to February.
Day 1 - Bagdogra to Gangtok
Mountain Ranges
Upon reaching at Bagdogra airport, you can take a cab and move straight towards Gangtok. It will take around 4-5 hours to reach Gangtok. Spend an evening on M.G road, do some shopping, buy some caps and extra muffler, which you will certainly need in your journey further and yes, do not forget to taste the authentic Momos and soup there. I have never tried this combination before and it was simply mind-blowing.
Where to Stay:
There are multiple options available to stay near M.G road. Check online and choose as per your budget. Just make sure it is at walking distance from M.G Road as that is where all the fun is!
Day 2 - Gangtok to Lachen
Gangtok to Lachen is a 5-6 hours drive and the route is filled with scenic beauty. You will follow Testa river during your entire trip. The river is so so appealing, one simple click and you have captured yourself a wallpaper for your computers. The tough task though, will be to find a river bank where you can spend your time. Once you do, you can sink yourself in the gushing waters before you move further to Lachen.
Testa River
You will reach the Lachen by late afternoon if you leave early morning. Lachen is the only village in India where plastic bottles are not allowed. You have to give up your plastic bottles before entering the village area. Isn't it such a great initiative? In the evenings, you can spend your time walking in the greens.
Day 3 - Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake And Return to Gangtok
Gurudongmar Lake is located to the north of the Kanchenjunga range at an altitude of 5183 metre. You need to start early to reach the lake as the visiting time is restricted till 11 am. I started my day at 4:30 in the morning and the route was one to die for! To fill your empty bellies, you can take a halt at Thangu valley for authentic breakfast.
Thangu valley
After 4 hours of drive from Lachen, I finally reached Gurudongmar Lake. The Lake was semi-frozen and it was looking absolutely stunning surrounded by snow-capped mountains, landscapes with shining sun and blue sky, nothing less than the description of the heavens!
Gurudongmar Lake
I came back to Lachen by afternoon and was back to Gangtok by late evening.
Instead of going to Gangtok, you can add 1 more day and can go to Lachung and Yumthang valley. This Valley looks like a vibrant rainbow in the months from late February and to mid June in the flowering season, too bad I had to miss that!
Day 4 - Tsongmo Lake and Nathula Pass
Tsongmo lake
Tsongmo lake is another scenic beauty located around 35 kilometers away from Gangtok, surrounded by mountains on all sides. The shape of the lake looks like the map of India if you see it from a higher point and also have good visualization. The drive to this lake offers breathtaking views and a number of hair pin bends. Next comes Nathula, which is a mountain pass which connects Sikkim with China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
Day 5 - Gangtok to Bagdogra
Time to fly back to your home with bundles of memories. Take a cab to Bagdogra and take further journey.
